Donovan McNabb said Sunday night that "the offense did a lot of great things" following a 39-10 Chicago Bears beatdown that dropped the Minnesota Vikings to 1-5.
Obviously, there's a clear disconnect between how McNabb believed he was performing and how
everyone else in the world
Leslie Frazier saw it. The Vikings coach announced Wednesday that he had benched McNabb in favor of rookie Christian Ponder, a move that "surprised" the 13-year veteran.
"We've done some good things on offense. We scored some points and moved the ball," McNabb said during a media session Wednesday. "But again, the only thing that I can do at this particular point is continue to support Christian and be ready to go when called upon."
McNabb said Frazier told him of the move Tuesday in a "professional conversation." Frazier said during his Wednesday news conference that he "didn't feel or sense that staying status quo was going to get us a win on Sunday."
The Vikings' passing offense ranks 31st in the NFL, and McNabb ranks 29th in touchdown passes, 26th in passing yards and 19th in completion percentage.
On Wednesday, McNabb sounded like a player who will be looking for his fourth home in four years after the 2011 season concludes.
"I have a lot of football left," he said. "At the end of the year, it will be something to look at and see what's next, but the focus is now, what I can do to prepare myself to get ready, as well as continue to get better."
McNabb's a pro, so don't look for him to be a distraction in Minnesota the rest of the way. We're sure he'll catch on somewhere next season, and he even could find himself in a starting competition in training camp if he lands in the right spot. But the days of a franchise handing him the reins no-questions-asked likely are done.
