Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, who played with fractured ribs Sunday in the 27-24 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers, also sustained a collapsed lung and will undergo additional tests this week, the team said Monday.
"Additional testing on the fractured rib of Tony Romo today revealed that he also has evidence of a pneumothorax -- a condition that is not unusual for an injury such as the one Romo sustained in the game in San Francisco," the Cowboys said in a statement. "Varying degrees of a pneumothorax can heal in differing time frames. The Cowboys medical team will continue to monitor the situation and conduct additional tests as the week progresses."
Romo's status for the Week 3 game against the Washington Redskins remains "up in the air," a team source told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora.
Romo initially was ruled out of the game against the 49ers but returned during the fourth quarter with Dallas trailing 24-14.
If Romo plays with the injury, he wouldn't be the first Cowboys quarterback to do so. Cowboys quarterback Don Meredith played in the 1968 Eastern Conference Championship Game at Cleveland after spending time in the hospital that week with a punctured lung and pneumonia.
Meredith threw three interceptions in that game, completing just 3 of 9 passes for 42 yards before coach Tom Landry pulled him in favor of Craig Morton. It was Meredith's last game in the NFL.
