Chiefs prepare for life without Berry, who has torn ACL

A dreadful start to the season just turned even worse for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry will miss the rest of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, a source with knowledge of the situation told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora on Monday.

Later in the day, Chiefs coach Todd Haley acknowledged the team was preparing to move forward without Berry.

"I won't go into details, but I will say it appears he will be out for the season," Haley said. "I know we just lost one of our best players, and that hurts."

Berry was injured during the first quarter of the Chiefs' 41-7 loss to the Buffalo Bills on a block by wide receiver Stevie Johnson. After coming out of the game, Berry attempted to return on the following defensive series. He went down on the first play before trainers attended to him.

Haley didn't say if he believed the block was dirty, as many contended and Johnson denied.

"I've said it many times, injuries happen," Haley said. "People are going to go down. I'm sure across the league, a number of guys were probably lost for the season yesterday."

Berry made 72 tackles and four interceptions last season en route to being named to the Pro Bowl in his rookie season. Berry was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
