Tebow-mania hit the links Saturday when Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow held his first celebrity golf tournament at the TPC Sawgrass Dye's Valley Course.
The inaugural Tim Tebow Foundation Celebrity Classic is being held two days before the start of practice for The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Fans paid $12.50 each to see participants that included Tebow, Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson and former University of Florida linemen Maurkice Pouncey and his brother, Mike -- the latter of whom was drafted 15th overall by the Miami Dolphins in the 2011 draft. Former Gators coach Urban Meyer and current coach Will Muschamp also took part.
"Itâs amazing," Tebow told The Florida Times-Union. "Iâm definitely happy and thankful to come back to my hometown and see this much support."
The crowd, estimated to be about 1,000 people, is said to be on par with an early week practice day for the PGA Tour event, which begins Thursday.
"Thereâs no question itâs about Tim," Muschamp told the Times-Union.
Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Tim Tebow Foundation, which raises money for youth around the world, according to the foundation's website.
"Iâm not surprised at all at the number of people here," said fan Bill Taylor, who drove from Kingsland, Ga. for the event. "Florida fans are going to work for a chance to see Tim Tebow play football or play golf."
