The Giants put Hixon on the waived/injured list Thursday, one month after he suffered a right anterior cruciate ligament tear during the team's first practice at New Meadowlands Stadium. The Giants risked losing Hixon's rights by waiving him, though it's rare for players to be claimed while they're dealing with a long-term injury.
Hixon's contract expires after the 2010 season. He will be paid his $1.684 million salary while on IR.
Hixon had 15 catches for 187 yards and one touchdown last season, but he made his mark on special teams, where he averaged 22.6 yards per kick return and 15.1 yards per punt return. Hixon, 25, started his NFL career with the Denver Broncos in 2006 and joined the Giants in 2007.
