| Free agency starts Friday, and there are a lot of great names out there. But with due respect to Jason Brown and Igor Olshansky, the biggest names in this year's pool are Albert Haynesworth, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Ray Lewis and Kurt Warner, thanks to the franchise tags. NFL.com editors Adam Rank, Andy Nesbitt, Jim Reineking and Justin Hathaway are back this week to look at these top names and where they might end up in NFL.com's "Instant Debate," presented by Reebok. |
Adam Rank (3:01:29 PM)): We'll kick off with Albert Haynesworth. Where do you think the best place would be for him? |
Justin Hathaway (3:03:03 PM): I think he should stay in Tennessee. The Titans played so well last season, and the team knows it needs him. I expect the Titans to open their wallet and pay the man. |
Jim Reineking (3:03:51 PM): I agree. Too many players go to where the money is and then fail to meet the standards set with their previous team. Haynesworth likely would be one of those players. He has a good situation in Tennessee, and the team wants to keep him and is willing to pay. |
Andy Nesbitt (3:04:17 PM): Who cares about meeting standards? It should be all about the money. Go where the money is. |
Adam Rank (3:05:10 PM): Does anybody think the value for Haynesworth might be overstated? He only has really done well in years when he was playing for a free-agent contract (2007-2008). He's not far removed from stomping Andre Gurode's head. |
Jim Reineking (3:05:56 PM): Yes, it's probably not a coincidence that Haynesworth registered career highs in sacks and tackles the last two seasons. He had 9.5 sacks from 2002 to 2006 and 14.5 the last two seasons. |
Justin Hathaway (3:06:30 PM): The only concern I have about Haynesworth is his health. Yes, he dominates the game when he's on the field, but he hasn't played 16 games in a season since 2002, when he was a rookie. For big money, I want 16 starts. |
Adam Rank (3:07:16 PM): Big money and huge risk spells Washington Redskins to me. But let's move on. There's another potential free-agent standout on the defensive side. Can you see Ray Lewis in another uniform? |
Justin Hathaway (3:07:44 PM): I can't, and that's because the Ravens want him back so bad. They will spend the money and make Lewis an offer he can't refuse. |
Jim Reineking (3:08:02 PM): No way. Ray Lewis is the face of the Baltimore Ravens' franchise. He has been with the team since its first season in 1996. That's like trying to imagine Brett Favre playing for some team other than the Packers. Err, wait ... nevermind. |
Justin Hathaway (3:08:39 PM): Like Favre, though, if Lewis goes anywhere, I think it would be the Jets. The New York spotlight and a coach he knows (Rex Ryan) could be enticing to Lewis. But I think he's a Raven in 2009. |
Andy Nesbitt (3:08:51 PM): I would like to see the Cowboys reach out and show Ray the money. We all know that team needs a leader in the locker room. |
Justin Hathaway (3:09:11 PM): Lewis and T.O. together? That could get interesting ... |
Adam Rank (3:10:24 PM): Remember when Terrell Owens mocked Lewis' dance when he was a member of the Eagles? Then T.O. immediately apologized the next day as if Lewis truly was the Godfather of the NFL. |
Jim Reineking (3:10:28 PM): Speaking of T.O. ... where will he be playing next season? Or, is that a completely separate Instant Debate discussion? |
Adam Rank (3:11:25 PM): Tune in next week. But speaking of disgruntled receivers, T.J. Houshmandzadeh almost assuredly will be playing for a new team. If you were a wide receiver on the market, where would you want to go? |
Andy Nesbitt (3:11:56 PM): Um .... New England? |
Jim Reineking (3:12:21 PM): I'm in favor of T.J. Houshmandzadeh going to any team where his fantasy value will rise, so as to continue to hear awkward "Houshamazilly ... championship!" references. I'm looking uncomfortably right at you, Indianapolis Colts. |
Justin Hathaway (3:12:49 PM): The Eagles make the most sense, I think. They need a receiver, and if they don't sign one, they will have a very angry Donovan McNabb. That's not worth the trouble. Plus, the Colts have Reggie Wayne and Anthony Gonzalez. |
Adam Rank (3:13:15 PM): Love the Houshmandzadeh call to New England. After years of playing in Cincinnati, would he take whatever the Patriots offered just to be on a winner? |
Justin Hathaway (3:13:46 PM): Can you imagine Randy Moss, Wes Welker and T.J. on the field at the same time? Nasty. |
Andy Nesbitt (3:14:17 PM): The Chargers should get serious about winning the AFC and go out and sign him. He could be the piece that puts them over the top and into Super Bowl XLIV. |
Justin Hathaway (3:14:36 PM): The Seahawks could be a darkhorse, too. Remember, Housh played at Oregon State and likes the Northwest. |
Adam Rank (3:15:18 PM): Plus his hair is kind of grunge! (Sorry, The Rock was on this weekend.) So we seem split on either being a No. 1 in Philly or Seattle, or a complimentary player in San Diego or New England. In any event, let's move on to Warner. Can you see him leaving Arizona? |
Justin Hathaway (3:16:03 PM): I don't think so. The Cardinals and Warner aren't that far apart on money, and he has said he'll either play in Arizona or retire. I'll take him at his word. |
Jim Reineking (3:16:43 PM): No chance whatsoever. Nothing screams Super Bowl team to 6-10 like handing over the reins to Matt Leinart. |
Justin Hathaway (3:17:12 PM): But hey, Leinart was great in House Bunny! Geez, I wonder how he didn't end up being the starting quarterback in Arizona. |
Jim Reineking (3:17:54 PM): I hope you didn't pay to see that! |
Andy Nesbitt (3:18:18 PM): I'd love to see him take the classic route of future Hall-of-Fame QBs and finish his career in the green and white of the New York Jets. But one more year with the Cardinals would come with 10 million-plus U.S. dollars, which would look great in anyone's retirement fund. |
Adam Rank (3:19:33 PM): Staying with Arizona guarantees nine indoor games each year. Besides, with the housing crisis in Arizona, he can't afford to move. |
Andy Nesbitt (3:20:01 PM): Plus, he gets to play in the NFC West, so a playoff spot is pretty much guaranteed. |
Adam Rank (3:20:37 PM): Word. Let's get a final prediction on where you think these four gentlemen will play next season. |
Justin Hathaway (3:21:25 PM): The only one who bolts for another team is Houshmandzadeh. Sorry, Cincinnati! At least you still have Ocho Cinco. |
Jim Reineking (3:22:07 PM): Haynesworth and Lewis will stay with their current teams. Houshmandzadeh will play for the Eagles. Warner retires, and the Cardinals return to their previous incarnation as one of the NFL's perennial mediocre teams. |
Andy Nesbitt (3:22:16 PM): Haynesworth to the Jets, Houschmazoo to the Chargers, Ray Lewis to the Cowboys, Warner back to desert for one last run. |
Adam Rank (3:23:04 PM): Haynesworth to D.C., Lewis to Dallas (Jerry Jones has been bluffing), Houshmandzadeh to Seattle and the Kurt Warner Machine will remain in Arizona. What do you guys say? |
