Dolphins sign three rookies

MIAMI -- The Miami Dolphins signed quarterback John Beck, the first of their two second-round draft choices this year, and center/guard Drew Mormino, the second of their two sixth-round selections, the team announced today. Both players signed four-year contracts. Also on Monday, the team signed defensive tackle Brian Soi as an undrafted college free agent. The 22-year-old Soi was eligible for the July 12 NFL supplemental draft but was not selected.

Beck was the 40th player taken overall in the draft and the fourth quarterback. He was a four-year letterman at BYU (2003-06) where he started his final three years. In his collegiate career, he completed 885 of 1,418 passes (62.4%) for 11,021 yards with 79 touchdowns and 34 interceptions. He had his best year as a senior when he connected on 289 of 417 passes (69.3%) for 3,885 yards with 32 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He was a first-team All-Mountain West Conference choice last year as well as the conference Offensive Player of the Year. He also was a first-team all-conference pick as a junior. Beck attended Mountain View High School in Mesa, Ariz.

Mormino was a four-year starter (2003-06) at Central Michigan, during which time he started at both center and guard. He opened all 25 games at center over his final two seasons, when he allowed only two sacks over a combined 1,729 offensive plays. He was a second-team All-Mid-American Conference pick as a senior. Mormino prepped at Stevenson High School Lincolnshire, Ill.

The 6-3, 315-pound Soi (pronounced SOY) played one year at Utah State (2005). That seas
on, he participated in all 11 games and recorded 31 tackles, 7.5 stops for loss, 4.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a blocked kick. Prior to that, he was a two-time all-state selection at Timpview High School in Provo, Utah. He was born on May 3, 1985 in American Samoa.
