Cincinnati did not play Pittsburgh in the divisional playoffs because, from 1970-1989, two teams from the same division could not meet prior to the conference championship game. N.Y. Jets finished ahead of New England based on head-to-head sweep (2-0). Los Angeles was top playoff seed based on better strength of schedule than Minnesota (.383 to Vikings' .332). Chicago finished ahead of Green Bay based on better division record (2-4 to Bears' 1-5).
