Lovie Smith interviews with San Diego Chargers

Former Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith will interview with the San Diego Chargers on Friday. Sources told NFL.com's Ian Rapoport that Smith was at O'Hare Airport in Chicago waiting at a gate with a flight to San Diego.

(First off, props to Rapoport who has sources at the airport. That's pretty slick.)

The Chargers haven't interviewed any coaches at this point. They wanted to hire a general manager first and former Indianapolis Colts' vice president of football operations Tom Telesco was hired Wednesday. Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians is a candidate for the job and admitted the position is much more attractive with Telesco running the show.

Smith would be your classic going-another-direction hire. Norv Turner was an established NFL entity known as an offensive specialist. Smith is all about defense and the Tampa 2.

To be continued...

UPDATE: The Chargersconfirmed the interview on their official website on Friday evening.
