The Seahawks already have a starting tight end in Zach Miller. They gave him $17 million guaranteed last year, including his $6 million base salary this year. Winslow "only" makes $3.3 million this year, and that's not guaranteed. He has to make the roster.
Carroll likes to talk about the different themes he has for each day of the week during the season. There is Tell the Truth Monday, Turnover Thursday, and Competition Wednesday. (Among others.)
Every day during training camp will be full of competition. At quarterback, we've got Matt Flynn, Tarvaris Jackson, and Russell Wilson squaring off. At wide receiver, Doug Baldwin, Mike Williams, Golden Tate, Deon Butler and Ben Obamanu are competing behind Sidney Rice.
Now Winslow will be added to the tight end mix. Miller's roster spot is assured, so Winslow will have to prove he's worth a spot over cheaper youngsters Cameron Morrah and Anthony McCoy.
If Winslow does make the team -- and we think he will -- then he'll start a tougher competition for consistent targets. This is just how Pete Carroll likes it.
