Cam vs. Calvin: Madden cover promises gold

This time around, we're guaranteed genuine star power on the cover of the popular EA Sports Madden video game.

It's down to Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson in the fan-driven cover contest, assuring us the game will be graced by one of the NFL's brightest bulbs.

Who better for the cover than Newton, one of football's most electrifying passers? The one who came out of the gate as a rookie looking very much like an arcade wonder. We knew from the first moments that Newton -- Charlotte's beloved "Swag Monster" -- was special. He's a solid fit for the task of cover boy.

Conversely, Johnson has redefined the wide receiver position. Matthew Stafford was a revelation in 2011, and he has Megatron to thank. Johnson never let down, his 1,681 yards and 16 touchdowns included one highlight-reel catch after another.

Fabiano: Drafting a "curse"

Considering the curse, should you still draft Cam Newton or Calvin Johnson if they win the Madden cover contest? Michael Fabiano has his take. More ...

There is, of course, the matter of the Madden curse. It plagued former Cleveland Browns running back Peyton Hillis last year, after he publicly shrugged it off. Newton has done the same, telling the Charlotte Observer last week that being on the cover is "what you make of it."

Neither player has enjoyed an easy path to the final fan vote: In the semifinals, Newton knocked off San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis, while Johnson topped Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
