When Michael Vick heard about Andy Reid's interest in Peyton Manning earlier this offseason, Vick shrugged it off.
"I really don't care," Vick said. "Peyton's in Denver. That's where he's going to be. But one thing I know, I know I'm one of the best quarterbacks in this league."
That's true when Vick is right, but too often last season he was hurt or making poor decisions with the ball. We wonder how Vick will react if the Eagles bring in a relatively high draft pick at quarterback next week. Things appear to be headed in that direction.
First the team was mentioned as a dark horse in the Robert Griffin sweepstakes. That didn't work out. Dan Pompeii of the National Football Post wrote Sunday that "a buzz is building in NFL front offices that the Eagles are going to take a quarterback fairly high."
A report that the Eagles were interested in the No. 4 overall pick (for Ryan Tannehill) was shot down locally on Sunday, but that's what the Eagles do. They shoot down reports. The Eagles appear to have some level of interest in Tannehill. If they can't get him, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the team invest a second round pick in someone like Brandon Weeden or Kirk Cousins.
This doesn't mean that Reid lacks faith in Vick. But anyone can see that Vick struggles to stay healthy, and he's a difficult player to project as he ages and loses speed.
Reid appears to want some future alternatives at quarterback not named Mike Kafka.Â
