Sort of breaking news: Rob Lowe reports Manning to retire

Peyton Manning is done. This according to former Brat Pack golden boy Rob Lowe.

"Hearing my fave, #18 Peyton Manningwill not return to #NFL. Wow," Lowe tweeted Wednesday, then added: "#Colts fans, let's hope my info is wrong. Don't like being wrong, but this time... I'm hoping."

After attempting to scoop the entire population, Lowe reached out to NFL Network's Rich Eisen to confirm the earth-shattering news.

"@richeisen My people are saying Manning will retire today," Lowe said. "What do you hear?"

"Get out," Eisen shot back.

If Rob Lowe were still living life as Sam Seaborn, the president's deputy communications director on "The West Wing," his "people" -- lodged within the nation's vast intelligence community -- might add a little weight to his freelance work as an NFL insider.

Our NFL insider, Jason La Canfora, took a peek into the matter.

"Ran the Rob Lowe Peyton Manning tweet past Manning's agent, Tom Condon, a little while ago," La Canfora tweeted. "Was first he'd heard of it and said if Manning was retiring it was news to him. I told Tom I had a feeling this wouldn't be the last call he got on this topic."

The Colts had no comment when contacted by NFL Network. Colts owner Jim Irsay issued a response via Twitter.
