Cowboys owner Jones: Garrett 'just getting started' in Dallas

Given that the Dallas Cowboys are still fighting for the NFC East lead, even the most casual observers would reason that Jason Garrett's job is safe. But considering how the Cowboys have lost games, and that two NFL coaches were fired this week, it's a question that was still asked to team owner Jerry Jones.

Jones, though, didn't know quite what to make of the idea that his rookie coach is in danger of finding the same fate.

the Giants' 37-34 win over the Cowboys on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 9:30 p.m. ET.

"Well, that's not a question that's in my mind, kinda worth responding to," Jones said Tuesday during his weekly radio show on KRLD-FM, per the team's official website. "But the answer's no. We're just getting started here."

Garrett, in his first year of a four-year contract, is 12-9 with the Cowboys, with six of those losses coming this season.

But the Cowboys have had plenty of opportunities for a clear-cut lead in the division. Of their six losses, five have come after fourth-quarter leads.

The overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals was low-lighted by Garrett freezing his own kicker at the end of regulation, which nullified a 49-yard field goal by Dan Bailey. Last week, Bailey had a 47-yard game-tying attempt blocked by the Giants.

Jones said he understands the frustration of fans that the Cowboys haven't been able to close games.

"I do understand their concern, and I would agree that we've had a difficult time this year closing out," Jones said. "We've had some games that we should have, if you look back at it from that perspective, won."

The Cowboys control their own destiny over the final three weeks, and a playoff appearance would presumably put an end to these questions.
