What could Donovan McNabb possibly have to offer a team right now? The Bears apparently might want to find out.
Initially, Chicago -- along with the rest of the league, for that matter -- let McNabb clear waivers last week after the Vikings released him. But CSNChicago reported Sunday night that the Bears will discuss bringing the veteran quarterback aboard after watching Caleb Hanie's dismal performance in their 10-3 loss to the Chiefs.
We know, we know. Plenty of folks believe McNabb is washed up, and it's hard to argue. But it's also hard to argue that the Bears are in good shape with Hanie as their starter.
If Chicago is, in fact, considering McNabb, that just goes to show how desperate they are.
Look at it like this: Prior to losing Jay Cutler with a broken thumb, Chicago had won five in a row, was 7-3 and looked like a clear-cut favorite for an NFC wild-card berth. Now, the Bears are spiraling downward after two straight losses, are in a three-way tie for the final two wild-card spots, and Hanie has done little to inspire confidence with six interceptions in two starts against the Raiders and Chiefs.
As if things couldn't get worse, the Bears now have to face the very real possibility of trying to make the playoffs without running back Matt Forte.
To call the situation in Chicago dire is probably an understatement. But can McNabb really do anything to improve it?
