The Kyle Orton era in Kansas City got off to an inglorious start in Sunday's 10-3 win over the Chicago Bears, when the new Chiefs quarterback hurt a finger on his throwing hand on his first play of the game after relieving starter Tyler Palko.
Orton checked into the game to start the second quarter and ran a flea-flicker on his first play, a second-and-10 call near midfield. But Orton was hit by Bears safety Major Wright as he released the ball, and immediately had to leave the field while holding his finger in the air. Trainers attended to Orton's finger, and he never returned.
Chiefs coach Todd Haley didn't have much of an update on Orton following the game, saying "We will see as the week moves forward. I don't have much to give you."
The Kansas City Star reported Orton wasn't wearing any bandaging on his hand following the game.
It wasn't immediately clear whether or not Orton was taking over for Palko or just running a certain offensive package or set of plays.Â
"We had to get him prepared to play," Haley said. "We had some things to do with him. We had a plan for him if needed. We weren't making a change there, so to speak, we were getting guys ready to play and get the job done."
Palko went 17-of-30 passing for 157 yards and a touchdown in his second start of the season in place of Matt Cassel.
