Authorities said Oakland Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain has been arrested for discharging a firearm within city limits, third degree assault, menacing, and reckless endangerment after an incident Wednesday night in his Alabama hometown.
Lt. John Crouch of the Decatur Police Department released a statement Thursday saying McClain allegedly fired a gun beside a man's head during a fight reported Wednesday night. The statement says the man begged McClain not to shoot him.
"I can tell you that Rolando McClain is under arrest," Crouch told Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. "He's been charged with third degree assault, menacing, reckless endangerment and discharging a firearm in city limits. He is still in custody."
No one was shot, but police said a man who was injured in the altercation drove himself to a hospital, where he was treated and released.
A smiling McClain was taken into custody on Thursday and held on $2,000 bond. Another man identified as Jerradius Willingham also is charged.
In an email to CSN Bay Area, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the NFL "will look into" the matter.
It previously was reported that McClain merely was present during the incident, and the police probe was not centered on the linebacker, who was in Alabama to attend his grandfather's funeral.
A Raiders spokesman confirmed Thursday to the Oakland Tribune that the team was aware of an incident involving McClain.
"We are aware of the incident. At this time we have no further comment," a Raiders spokesman said. The team has not released a statement since news of McClain's arrest.
Raiders coach Hue Jackson, via CSN Bay Area, expressed confidence that McClain would play this weekend when the Raidersvisit the Miami Dolphins, but the website reported that McClain's arrest was unknown at the time of Jackson's news conference.
Earlier this year McClain, the 2009 Butkus Award winner at Alabama, reported someone in Decatur shooting at his vehicle.
