Texans WR Johnson stunned by Schaub injury, near return

When Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak announced that quarterback Matt Schaub suffered a "significant" foot injury last weekend against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and would be out indefinitely, the news was met with shock and disbelief by many throughout the NFL, including wide receiver Andre Johnson.

"Oh definitely (it's stunning)," the Texan told KRIV-TV on Monday. "It's devastating. We wish he could be out there with us.

"During the game, I saw him limping a little bit, and you know, he said he was fine. He kept playing. To come in and hear that (Monday), it was like 'Wow,' because he went out and finished playing the game.

"Now you're hearing rumors that it's possible he could miss the rest of the season and things like that. It's kind of like, 'Where did all that come from?' "

Kubiak said Monday that Schaub was injured on a quarterback sneak coming out of the end zone late during the second quarter against the Bucs, and the Houston Chronicle reported Schaub is hopeful a second opinion on the injury will help him avoid a possible season-ending surgery to repair the Lisfranc joint in his right foot.

Matt Leinart is set to start for the Texans when they face the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 12 following their bye.

Schaub's injury is the latest to affect a Texans star player. The team placed defensive end Mario Williams on injured reserve after he tore his pectoral muscle in Week 5, and Johnson has dealt with his own debilitating hamstring injury that has sidelined him for the past six games.

"It just kind of feels like we can't catch a break," Johnson said. "I was more excited about me coming back, and then you get some bad news like that. It's just something we'll have to deal with. Hopefully Matt won't miss the whole season."

There might be some good news for the Texans on the horizon, however, as Johnson told KRIV-TV he expects to play against the Jaguars.

"I feel pretty good," Johnson said. "I went out and ran routes (Monday) morning. Everything went well, didn't feel anything bothering me. (Tuesday) I'll go out and run some longer routes, a lot of deep balls and stuff like that and see how that goes.

"I expect to be on the field next week against Jacksonville."
