Auburn QB Newton set for weekend workout with Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins will hold a private workout with Auburn quarterback Cam Newton this weekend, a source with knowledge of the situation said Wednesday.

Following his workout with Miami's staff, the 2010 Heisman Trophy winner will travel to Buffalo for interviews with the Bills' brass, according to the source. The Bills, who hold the third overall pick in April's NFL draft, had dinner with Newton the night before his March 8 pro day at Auburn.

The Carolina Panthers, who pick first, also have dined with Newton, NFL Network insider Michael Lombardi reported two weeks ago.

The Dolphins own the 15th pick, but they might be in the market for a quarterback. Chad Henne has endured two up-and-down seasons as Miami's starter, and Tyler Thigpen and Tom Brandstater are the other quarterbacks currently listed on the roster. Also, veteran Chad Pennington has said he will come back for the 2011 season despite having his fourth shoulder surgery.

Over the next few weeks, Newton also has workouts or interviews scheduled with the Denver Broncos (No. 2 pick), Cincinnati Bengals (No. 4), Cleveland Browns (No. 6), Tennessee Titans (No. 8), Washington Redskins (No. 10) and Minnesota Vikings (No. 12).
