Player News

  • Calvin Johnson (WR) DET

    Updated 11/26/09 9:09 AM

Johnson will start Thursday against Green Bay for the Lions.

Impacts: Johnson, who has knee and hand injuries suffered injuries in Sunday's dramatic win over Cleveland, missed three days of practice this week.

  • Matthew Stafford (QB) DET

    Updated 11/26/09 8:49 AM

Stafford was in the starting lineup Thursday against Green Bay, less than a week after separating his non-throwing shoulder.

Impacts: Stafford missed three days of practice after suffering the injury in Sunday's dramatic win over Cleveland.

  • Jay Cutler (QB) CHI

    Updated 11/25/09 2:19 PM

Cutler discussed his poor play Wednesday. He said he knew he would be the center of attention for a team that has long been searching for a franchise quarterback. "I haven't played up to my expectations. I think that's the most important part. I can play better. I know that," Cutler said. "It's a process, though. I think everyone in the offense knows what we're trying to get done."

Impacts: Cutler is correct in saying he can play better. The Bears have lost five of six and Cutler leads the NFL with 18 interceptions. Fantasy owners should stay away from starting Cutler this week at Minnesota and possibly the rest of the season.

  • Ahmad Bradshaw (RB) NYG

    Updated 11/25/09 12:51 PM

Bradshaw won't play at Denver on Thursday because of a sprained left ankle.

Impacts: Bradshaw was hurt during the Giants' 34-31 overtime win over Atlanta on Sunday. He's second on the team with 549 yards rushing.

  • Kerry Rhodes (FS) NYJ

    Updated 11/25/09 12:07 PM

Rhodes has been demoted by coach Rex Ryan in favor of Eric Smith.

Impacts: Rhodes has failed to be the playmaking presence Ryan expected when he compared him to Baltimore's Ed Reed in the offseason. Instead, Rhodes has struggled with no interceptions, sacks, forced fumbles or fumble recoveries.

  • Byron Leftwich (QB) TB

    Updated 11/25/09 9:09 AM

Leftwich's season is over after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers put the backup quarterback on injured reserve with a sore right elbow.

Impacts: Leftwich opened the season as the starting quarterback, but was replaced by Josh Johnson after three games. Rookie Josh Freeman has since become the starter, and Leftwich had been listed as third on the depth chart.

  • Eric Wood (G) BUF

    Updated 11/25/09 8:49 AM

Wood continues to recuperate in a Jacksonville hospital three days after breaking two bones in his left leg.

Impacts: A person familiar with the injury tells The Associated Press that Wood isn't expected to return to Buffalo until Thursday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the team has not updated the player's status since Monday. Wood had surgery to repair the compound fracture hours after he was hurt in an 18-15 loss to the Jaguars on Sunday. The injury was so gruesome that CBS elected against showing more than one replay.

  • Fabian Washington (CB) BAL

    Updated 11/25/09 8:49 AM

Washington is expected to miss the remainder of the season after hurting his knee during Sunday's loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Impacts: On his Twitter account, Washington wrote: "Thanx for all of your support. Yes I do have a torn ACL. But I'll get through this. Go Ravens." "It looks like he has an ACL tear. As of right now, we're proceeding as if he's done for the season," coach John Harbaugh said Monday.

  • Jon Runyan (T) SD

    Updated 11/25/09 7:27 AM

Runyan says he'll retire at the end of the season and launch a campaign for Congress in New Jersey's 3rd District.

Impacts: The 35-year-old offensive lineman was signed Tuesday to play the remainder of the season with the San Diego Chargers. Runyan said in a statement that he had told Republican officials in Burlington County that he would retire after the season and seek to challenge Democratic Rep. John Adler in 2010.

  • Calvin Johnson (WR) DET

    Updated 11/24/09 4:38 PM

The Detroit Lions practiced Tuesday without quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Calvin Johnson. The injured players watched the workouts.

Impacts: Johnson has hand and knee injuries. Both Johnson and Stafford don't have much time to get healthy for the next game. Detroit hosts the Green Bay Packers in its annual Thanksgiving game.

  • Brandon Jacobs (RB) NYG

    Updated 11/24/09 4:38 PM

Jacobs says his right leg feels "really good" after injuring it against Atlanta, and he could've returned to the game Sunday.

Impacts: Jacobs missed the fourth quarter and overtime in the Giants' 34-31 win after he was tackled by Thomas DeCoud and Stephen Nicholas on a 5-yard run late in the third quarter. Jacobs says it "wasn't anything bad," and participated in full practice on Monday and was expected to again on Tuesday. He walked through the locker room without being visibly hindered and should be ready to go against Denver on Thursday night.

  • Josh Bell (DB) GB

    Updated 11/24/09 4:38 PM

The Green Bay Packers have signed former Denver Broncos cornerback Josh Bell.

Impacts: The Packers are lacking depth at cornerback after Al Harris' season-ending knee injury. Bell played in nine games, including five starts, for the Broncos last season. A 5-foot-11, 177-pound second-year player, Bell signed with San Diego as an undrafted free agent out of Baylor and spent the 2008 preseason with the Chargers. He later joined the Broncos' practice squad and was signed to the active roster. Denver cut him before the start of this season.
