Player News

  • Drew Brees (QB) NO

    Updated 2/9/10 3:50 PM

The Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints are celebrating Mardi Gras-style. Brees and other players were throwing beads into the crowds as confetti floated in the air. One float carried an oversized replica of the Super Bowl trophy.

Impacts: Carnival floats carrying players, coaches and team owner Tom Benson started rolling through downtown New Orleans for a victory parade Tuesday. Brees was named game MVP as the Saints' 31-17 victory over the Indianapolis Colts capped just the ninth winning season in the team's 43-year history.

  • Steven Jackson (RB) STL

    Updated 2/9/10 3:22 PM

Jackson won't face criminal charges over allegations that he beat a girlfriend who was nine months pregnant with the couple's child at his Las Vegas home last year, a police spokeswoman said Tuesday. Investigators found insufficient evidence that Jackson, 26, attacked Supriya Harris of Mableton, Ga., in March 2009, Las Vegas police Officer Barbara Morgan said.

Impacts: Morgan said the case will be closed, and that records relating to the investigation would not immediately be released. ``Our investigation is complete,'' said Morgan, a department spokeswoman. ``I don't think the time passage was a factor here. We contacted the victim, the accused and witnesses. There's insufficient evidence to go forward with the case.'' Jackson issued a statement Jan. 28 through one of his agents calling the accusations ``untrue'' and ``hurtful.''

  • Matt Hasselbeck (QB) SEA

    Updated 2/9/10 1:50 PM

Seahawks new offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates says Hasselbeck ``has been incredible'' learning his new system.

Impacts: A revival for Hasselbeck is quite possible since he's the most experienced quarterback in the NFC West with Kurt Warner having retired. If Hasselbeck has truly picked up this system like Bates claims, the shy is the limit for the Seahawks' offense.

  • Julius Peppers (DE) CAR

    Updated 2/9/10 1:32 PM

Peppers no longer wants a long-term contract with Carolina, saying the Panthers have ignored him this offseason. In an interview aired Tuesday morning on Charlotte radio station WFNZ-AM, the five-time Pro Bowl defensive end indicated he's irritated by the team's ``silence'' and has changed his stance on whether he wants to continue his career in Carolina.

Impacts: While agent Carl Carey said last week he believes the Panthers aren't interested in retaining Peppers, Carolina's career sacks leader, team officials haven't announced their plans for the impending free agent. General manager Marty Hurney didn't immediately return a phone message Tuesday. ``How can you say you want to be somewhere when you're not really sure if they want you there because they're not even talking to you?'' Peppers said.

  • Herb Taylor (OT) DEN

    Updated 2/8/10 4:05 PM

The Giants have have been awarded Taylor off waivers from Denver.

Impacts: Taylor was originally a sixth-round draft choice by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2007. In two seasons with the Chiefs, Taylor played in 18 games with one start. Although he has primarily played left tackle in this career, has also filled in at the guard and tackle spots on the right side. Taylor was waived by Kansas City on Sept. 4 and signed by Denver on Dec. 9. He was on the active roster for one game but did not play.

  • Mark Brunell (QB) NO

    Updated 2/8/10 3:48 PM

Brunell earned his first Super Bowl title when the Saints won 31-17 over the Colts on Sunday.

Impacts: The 17-year veteran is an impending free agent. He twice lost in AFC title games with Jacksonville, and may have capped off an underrated career by going out on top as Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees' backup.

  • Marlin Jackson (CB) IND

    Updated 2/8/10 3:23 PM

The Colts think Jackson, their 2005 first-round pick, will return after tearing an ACL for the second straight season.

Impacts: In 2008, it was Jackson's right knee. This season, it was his left.

  • Peyton Manning (QB) IND

    Updated 2/8/10 2:56 PM

One bad pass by Manning hasn't cost the Indianapolis Colts any cachet. Manning and the Colts are favored to win next year's Super Bowl, according to odds released Monday by BetUS.com.

Impacts: Indianapolis is a 7-1 favorite to take home the NFL championship, followed by the Chargers (8-1), Saints (9-1) and the Patriots (10-1).

  • Dwight Freeney (DE) IND

    Updated 2/8/10 1:48 PM

Freeney had the lone sack of the Super Bowl in a 31-17 loss to the Saints on Sunday.

Impacts: Freeney had been listed as questionable all week. But he worked out on the field less than two hours before kickoff at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens and was active.

  • Austin Collie (WR) IND

    Updated 2/8/10 1:48 PM

Collie had six catches for 66 yards in a 31-17 loss to the Saints in the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Impacts: Collie finished with 17 catches for 241 yards in the postseason.

  • Reggie Wayne (WR) IND

    Updated 2/8/10 1:48 PM

Wayne had five catches for 46 yards in a 31-17 loss to the Saints in the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Impacts: Wayne finished with 16 catches for 164 yards in the postseason.

  • Joseph Addai (RB) IND

    Updated 2/8/10 1:48 PM

Addai rushed 13 times for 77 yards and one TD and had seven catches for 58 yards in a 31-17 loss to the Saints in the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Impacts: Addai finished with 180 yards rushing on 40 carries and 11 catches for 85 yards in the postseason.
