The National Football League has a strength of schedule formula that's simple to understand ... take the opponent's records from the previous season, add up the wins and losses and calculate a percentage. Our fantasy points allowed (FPA) rating is similar, as it uses statistics (fantasy points) surrendered by opponents the previous year against a single position both at home and on the road instead of team records. For example, the Miami Dolphins allowed an average of 25.85 fantasy points per road game to wide receivers in 2013. As a result, any runner who faces them at home this season is rewarded 25.85 points. The bigger the point total, the easier the schedule.
These ratings are not to be confused with player rankings and are not the be-all, end-all in determining a player's stock. However, owners should use them when picking between players with similar value and looking for potential sleepers.

2014 Outlook:Fantasy owners will be expecting bigger things from Cruz and his Giants teammates after a subpar 2013. However, he'll have to do it without Hakeem Nicks and with a quarterback that appears to be in serious decline. Good thing the Giants are still in the NFC East, which boasted three of the 12 most WR-friendly defenses in the league. Add the Vikings and Jaguars to the mix and things are looking up for Cruz and company ... on paper, at least.

2014 Outlook: Jones should jump in as the top receiver on the Raiders depth chart. That's the good news. The better news is that he'll face off against the Chargers and Broncos a combined four times. A game against the Jets could offer some respite. Now the question is: Will Matt Schaub be able to consistently get the football to his wideouts? The veteran's failure to do that in 2013 led to his eventual signing with Oakland. There's no guarantee Schaub will get things back on track in 2014.

2014 Outlook: As though Thomas and his Broncos cohorts weren't good enough already, but they get four games against the Chargers and Raiders as well as games against the Bills and Jets. They also have the added benefit of having Peyton Manning direct the offense. Thomas was already going to be one of the first receivers off the board in most 2014 drafts, but this might just be enough reason to nudge him a little higher up the board.

2014 Outlook: The porous secondaries of the NFC East await Dez Bryant and company once again in 2014. That didn't mean as much last season, however, as Bryant was often a forgotten man in the Cowboys offensive game plan. But with Scott Linehan bringing his aerial attack from Detroit to Dallas, it's hard to imagine Bryant having nearly as many ghostly outings this season. Tony Romo's top target could be in line for a top three fantasy finish at his position.
5. Tavon Austin, St. Louis Rams (22.20 points):

2014 Outlook: At first glance, things don't seem to line up well for Austin and the Rams, considering they have six games this year against the Cardinals, 49ers and Seahawks. It's once you get out of the division that things start to open up a little bit -- especially games against the AFC West and NFC East. However, if won't make a lot of difference if St. Louis can't figure out a way to get the ball in the hands of its best playmakers, something that stifled Austin's production in 2013.
T-6. Percy Harvin, Seattle Seahawks (22.07 points):

2014 Outlook: Harvin and the Seahawks have a schedule that is nearly identical to Austin and the Rams -- not surprising since they play in the same division. The difference is that Seattle has proven it can get the ball to Harvin with a chance to make plays. The downside is that the Seahawks are still going to run an offense that is predicated heavily on giving the ball to Marshawn Lynch. Regardless, Harvin should still be a fantasy impact player, with his supporting cast -- Doug Baldwin and Jermaine Kearse -- offering spot-start value.

2014 Outlook: Much will be expected of Shorts this season with Justin Blackmon's status for 2014 still in doubt. The young receiver was inconsistent when called upon to be a No. 1 receiver, but should have opportunities to shine against a schedule that offers a few soft spots. The bigger question is ... who will be throwing him the football? It's likely that the Jaguars will pursue a quarterback in the draft, which should go a long way toward determining what Shorts' draft value will be in 2014.

2014 Outlook: Edelman came from seemingly nowhere to become the Patriots' top wideout, helping plenty of fantasy owners in the process. This season, there's no secret where Tom Brady will look to go first with the football and Edelman will have a chance to work against a fairly favorable schedule. Matchups against the Broncos, Raiders, Chargers, Packers and Jets (twice) should have fantasy owners fired up about what's to come in 2014. It's also worth keeping an eye on Danny Amendola, Aaron Dobson and Kenbrell Thompkins as secondary receiving options as well.

2014 Outlook: Six games against the NFC West isn't the most favorable part of Crabtree's schedule. But he and his 49er teammates can make up for it with four games against the NFC East and four more against the Chargers, Raiders, Broncos and Bears. Crabtree's biggest obstacle might be staying healthy during for a full season -- a goal that has eluded him for parts of his career. Adding Brandon Lloyd to the receiving corps could help open things up for Colin Kaepernick's top target.

2014 Outlook: Fitzgerald's production has declined in recent seasons. Part of that has to do with spotty quarterback play in Arizona. Part of it has to do with a schedule that forces him to line up against some of the tougher secondaries in the NFL. His games in the NFC West won't be a picnic, but there are some soft spots in the schedule -- notably against the NFC East and much of the AFC West. Now, here's to hoping Carson Palmer can consistently deliver the ball on time and on target.

2014 Outlook: Decker will attempt to be a big fish in a really big pond in New York. However, he might find life to be a little more difficult without Peyton Manning throwing him the football. Decker might also find it tough sledding against the members of the AFC East, who were tough on receivers last season. Gang Green's pass-catchers will have to take advantage of opportunities where they can find them. Games against the Packers, Chargers and Raiders are just a few of those potential opportunities in 2014.

2014 Outlook: Now that Kenny Britt is out of Tennessee, Kendall Wright is the undisputed No. 1 receiver in the offense. He takes that role with a schedule that could be worse. Then again, it could be better. The secondaries of the AFC South are a mixed bag, while the AFC North has a tendency to be stingy against wideouts. If there's a silver lining, it's in the games against Dallas, Washington and Philadelphia. Still, Wright is going to need some help if he's going to prosper for the Titans and fantasy owners.
13. Julio Jones, Atlanta Falcons (21.88 points):

2014 Outlook: The Falcons and fantasy enthusiasts alike are excited about th return of Jones, who should bolster a receiving corps that struggled with injury for much of 2013. However, his schedule within the division won't do him many favors. It's probably a good thing that Jones' talent isn't likely to be hampered by a middle-of-the-road slate of games. That's not to say that it's all bad. There are quality matchups against the Packers and Vikings that Jones and Roddy White should certainly be able to exploit.
T-14. Brandon Marshall, Chicago Bears (21.79 points):

2014 Outlook:Brandon Marshall is listed as the top receiver in Chicago's offense, but Alshon Jeffery is nipping at his heels to take the spot at the top of th depth chart -- and yet the duo remains among the most productive in the league. Both players should find plenty of room to operate in their games against Detroit, Green Bay and Minnesota. The same goes for matchups with the Cowboys and Jets. Contests against the 49ers and Panthers might not be nearly as favorable.

He could take on added importance in the offense if Jimmy Graham's contract dispute stretches into the preseason. New Orleans still boasts one of the most efficient offenses around. They'll need it against a schedule that doesn't feature many soft spots beyond Minnesota and Dallas.

2014 Outlook: Like the Saints, the Packers are pretty nifty in the passing game. They'll need to be against a slate that includes tough matchups against the Panthers, Saints and Seahawks. Nelson and company could find a respite against some of their NFC North rivals as well as a game against the Eagles. More importantly, Green Bay will need to keep their key pieces healthy after missing Aaron Rodgers and Randall Cobb for significant stretches of 2013. Add Jarrett Boykin to the Rodgers-Nelson-Cobb triumvirate and Green Bay will once again be a handful for defenses around the NFL.

2014 Outlook: Watkins is now the marquee name in a young and intriguing receiving corps. Playing alongside Robert Woods and Mike Williams, the Bills have a trio of pass-catchers that are likely tantalize fantasy owners with plenty of potential, but could be lacking in on-the-field production. There is some upside in that the Bills face a fairly middling schedule against receivers, but it's hard to see anyone in this group rising above the level of a WR3 this season.

2014 Outlook: Looking at the schedule, the Panthers won't have an easy go of things. Four games against the Saints and Buccaneers combined with matchups against the tough AFC North secondaries to go along with the Seahawks don't make for a very inviting schedule. However, that pales in comparison to the personnel that will take the field in Carolina. After suffering significant losses at the receiver position, the names that have come in to take their places aren't likely to move the needle very much. It's enough to have plenty of fantasy enthusiasts worried about Cam Newton's status for 2014.

2014 Outlook:Pierre Garcon got a nice complement when Washington added former rival DeSean Jackson this offseason. That duo has the talent to terrorize every defense they encounter. The downside is that they could match up with a lot of secondaries that aren't very easily frightened. The AFC South and NFC West feature a slew of teams that tend to be stingy against wide receivers. On the flip side, four games against the Cowboys and Eagles could be where Garcon and Jackson see a lot of their production.

2014 Outlook: First things first -- this is Calvin Johnson we're talking about. Until further notice, Megatron remains the preeminent receiver in fantasy football. New for 2014, he'll have extra help on the other side with Golden Tate, which should open him up even more. That being said, the Lions don't have the most WR-friendly schedule with games against the Giants, Dolphins, Cardinals and Pantehrs looking extra troublesome. However, that's the type of issue that might make you think twice about drafting someone further down Detroit's depth chart. It shouldn't concern you about Johnson.

2014 Outlook: Now that DeSean Jackson has flown south to Washington, the No. 1 job in Philly belongs to Maclin. He and Riley Cooper will have to pick up their play against a pretty rugged schedule. Dallas and Washington offer some bright spots for fantasy owners, but there is much more bad than good on the horizon. The four games against the NFC West promise to be challenging as do contests against the Panthers, Titans and Texans. This could be the year we get a true test of how well Chip Kelly's offense works.
22. Reggie Wayne, Indianapolis Colts (21.59 points):

2014 Outlook: The first step for Wayne in 2014 will be proving he's completely healed after ACL surgery last season. He'll need to be ready in order to face an AFC South schedule that won't be very flexible. But that's not the end of the trouble. Games against the Bengals, Browns, Steelers and Giants could also be problematic. The addition of Hakeem Nicks to the receiving corps will be a boost. And oh yeah, there's still Andrew Luck throwing the football. Indy's schedule isn't the best in the world, but there's enough talent to counteract the difficulty.

2014 Outlook: The best thing to happen to Patterson in the past few months is the hire of Norv Turner. The new offensive coordinator says he plans to do a lot of creative things to get the football in the speedy receiver's hands. That's a good thing because Patterson could find it tough going against this schedule. Detroit offers positive potential, but that's offset by games against the Patriots, Saints, Buccaneers, Rams and Dolphins. Even with a talented playcaller at the helm, that could be a tall order for a receiver entering his second season.

2014 Outlook:Andre Johnson isn't the receiver he once was, but that doesn't mean he's finished. The veteran should benefit from having Arian Foster healthy as well as the hopeful progression of DeAndre Hopkins. Who will deliver the football from the pocket is the biggest question surrounding the Texans offense in 2014. Whoever it is won't have an easy time of it with four games against the Colts and Titans. If there are some softer spots in the schedule, they come with games against Washington, Philadelphia, Dallas and Oakland.
25. Vincent Jackson, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (21.52 points):

2014 Outlook: At times, Vincent Jackson is the epitome of a No. 1 fantasy receiver. Other times, he's far too invisible in the stat sheets. In 2014, he could struggle with inconsistency at quarterback, a lack of a playmaking No. 2 WR option and a schedule that features games against the Panthers, Saints, Bengals, Browns and Steelers. Fantasy owners might be hard pressed to consider Jackson a WR1 this year.
26. Mike Wallace, Miami Dolphins (21.49 points):

2014 Outlook: Near the end of the 2013 season, Wallace started to become a playmaker and looked to have built a rapport with quarterback Ryan Tannehill. He'll need to have built upon that relationship because the Dolphins could face a schedule that doesn't favor a lot of big plays in the passing game. The Jets, Broncos and Raiders are some of the better matchups, but they're canceled out by games against the Patriots and Ravens.

2014 Outlook:Torrey Smith has a new sidekick in Steve Smith. However, it might not be enough to overcome the ups and downs of Joe Flacco at quarterback. It also might not be enough to handle the difficult AFC North or East division. For that matter, games against the Texans, Titans, Saints and Panthers. The younger Smith took great strides last season in proving he could be a team's top wideout. He'll have a tough time maintaining that this season ... and certainly has a long way to go to earn that distinction in fantasy circles.

2014 Outlook: Brown was a mild surpise with his top 10 fantasy finish last season. He might have a tough time duplicating that in 2014 against a tough AFC North schedule. It will be no help that the Texans, Titans, Bengals, Browns and Panthers also make appearances on the slate. The Steelers passing game has been fairly uneven in recent years -- Ben Roethlisberger is no one's fantasy QB1 -- and it will need to make some major improvements to make enthusiasts feel comfortable against this schedule.
29. A.J. Green, Cincinnati Bengals (21.36 points):

2014 Outlook: Similar to Calvin Johnson, A.J. Green is one of the few receivers that is fairly schedule-proof. The same might not apply to his comrades in the receiving group. It certainly doesn't apply to the mercurial Andy Dalton. So it's worth viewing any Bengals pass-catcher not named Green with a cautious eye on draft day. Six games against the Ravens, Browns and Steelers are a tough foundation that doesn't get any more friendly with contests against the Titans, Panthers, Patriots and Saints. Good luck with that one.
30. Miles Austin, Cleveland Browns (21.33 points):

2014 Outlook: With Josh Gordonsuspended for the year, Austin will be the top option in the passing attack. Unfortunately, he has the uneven Brian Hoyer as his quarterback and faces the third toughest schedule for wide receivers. Austin and the rest of his Browns wide receivers aren't even worth a late-round flier in all fantasy formats this fall. Jordan Cameron is the only pass-catcher worth owning.
31. Keenan Allen, San Diego Chargers (21.22 points)

2014 Outlook:Keenan Allen had a nice debut both for the Chargers and fantasy owners. However, there are questions whether or not he has already approached his ceiling. It's also fair to wonder if he can be an No. 1 receiver against a beastly schedule. The four games against the NFC West won't be fun. Nor will the matchups against the Patriots and Ravens. Philip Rivers had a nice resurrection in 2013, he might need to even better to keep Allen's value afloat.
