A breakdown of trades executed leading up to and during the 2009 NFL Draft:
Sunday, April 26
| Chiefs trade up to take tight end | ||
| Chiefs receive: | Dolphins receive: | |
| Analysis: After the trade of Tony Gonzalez to Atlanta, the Chiefs are looking for a replacement. O'Connell will join a tight end group in Kansas City that also includes Brad Cottam, Tony Curtis, Thomas Gafford and Sean Ryan. | ||
| Colts boot Eagles from No. 222 spot, pick kicker | ||
| Colts receive: | Eagles receive: | |
| Analysis: McAfee trained to play soccer last year at West Virginia, but quit the team in order to enhance his NFL draft status. Turns out it worked, as McAfee became the fifth specialist (a group including kickers, punters and long snappers) to have their name called at Radio City Music Hall. Hunter Smith -- after 10 years with the Colts -- signed a free-agent contract with the Redskins this offseason, thus creating a glaring hole on the roster that the Colts have not experienced for a decade. | ||
| Raiders get run-blocking tight end | ||
| Raiders receive: | Panthers receive: | |
| Analysis: From the same school that produced the Colts' Dallas Clark comes Myers, but the two tight ends aren't cut from the same cloth. NFL.com's Gil Brandt says that Myers is more of a blocking tight end, and will serve as an extra lineman more than as a pass catcher. Munnerlyn could bolster the depth in the Panthers secondary. | ||
| Broncos make move to take a quarterback | ||
| Broncos receive: | Lions receive: | |
| Analysis: NFL Network's Mike Mayock noted during Sunday's draft broadcast that Brandstater is a "down-the-road pick," given that the Broncos only have two quarterbacks currently on the roster and the team needed a young passer to develop. The Lions' pick, Follett, developed a reputation as being one of the Pac-10's hardest hitters. For complete pick-by-pick analysis, check out NFL.com's Draft Tracker. | ||
| Saints kick up to pick punter | ||
| Saints receive: | Eagles receive: | |
| Analysis: NFL.com's Bucky Brooks notes that Morstead has some placekicking experience, but the former SMU Mustang's best shot at a roster spot is solely as a punter. Click here for more pick-by-pick analysis from the fifth round. | ||
| Vikings' bump up brings in Brinkley | ||
| Vikings receive: | Redskins receive: | |
| Analysis: NFL.com's Bucky Brooks expounds on what Brinkley's addition means to the Vikings, saying that the former Gamecock is a hard-hitter who punishes ball carriers and will add a bit of toughness to the defense. Glenn is a converted linebacker. Click here for more pick-by-pick analysis from the fifth round. | ||
| Cowboys stay active, snag Smith | ||
| Cowboys receive: | Falcons receive: | |
| Analysis: The Cowboys remain one of the draft's most active participants, which is quite an accomplishment given that they didn't even possess a first-round pick. The Falcons grabbed a player who, at the very least, can add depth at the tackle position. | ||
| Broncos sneak up eight slots for McKinley | ||
| Broncos receive: | Ravens receive: | |
| Analysis: NFL.com's Bucky Brooks says that McKinley is a polished route-runner with good hands, and will give the Broncos another athletic receiver to add to their spread formations. NFL.com's Gil Brandt and Pat Kirwan agree that Peerman is a great value pick for the Ravens in the sixth round, and could provide a lift in the kicking game. For complete pick-by-pick analysis, check out NFL.com's Draft Tracker. | ||
| Patriots keep making moves, get Ohrnberger | ||
| Ravens receive: | Patriots receive: | |
| Analysis: The Patriots parlayed the picks acquired in the Ellis Hobbs trade to move up and select Ohrnberger, a guard from Penn State who should fit right into the Patriots' zone-blocking scheme. NFL.com's Pat Kirwan calls this "a classic Patriots pick." Ingram, it should be noted, was the first long snapper selected in the draft. For complete pick-by-pick analysis, check out NFL.com's Draft Tracker. | ||
| Eagles add Hobbs to team with former mate Samuel | ||
| Eagles receive: | Patriots receive: | |
| Analysis: A year after signing Asante Samuel, the Eagles have brought in another former Patriot, Hobbs. Hobbs will add depth to the Eagles' defensive secondary and also provide a boost in the return game. | ||
| Cowboys move down again in deal with Bucs | ||
| Buccaneers receive: | Cowboys receive: | |
| Analysis: As the Cowboys continue to acquire late-round picks, the Buccaneers swooped in and grabbed Moore, the second defensive lineman selected by the team in this draft (Texas' Roy Miller was the other). In Williams, the Cowboys took a player with pass-rushing potential. | ||
| Eagles, Seahawks continue to make moves | ||
| Seahawks receive: | Eagles receive: | |
| Analysis: Two of the draft's more active teams continue to wheel and deal. The Seahawks moved up to get Butler, a developmental prospect who could blossom into a solid contributor in multiple receiver sets. | ||
| Patriots get another 2010 second-round pick | ||
| Titans receive: | Patriots receive: | |
| Analysis: For the second time on Day 2 of the 2009 NFL Draft, the Patriots have traded down and acquired a second-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. As the rich get richer, the Titans went ahead and selected a quick tight end who could give the team another threat in the passing game. | ||
| Giants move up to get Barden | ||
| Giants receive: | Eagles receive: | |
| Analysis: The Giants moved up to grab Barden, a small-school prospect with big-time upside. Barden stands at 6-foot-6 and will give the Giants another potential big target in the team's attempt to replace Plaxico Burress. Barden becomes the second receiver selected by the Giants in four total draft picks. The team also grabbed North Carolina's Hakeem Nicks in the first round. | ||
| Jaguars make bold move | ||
| Jaguars receive: | Patriots receive: | |
| Analysis: The Patriots once again made a savvy move by picking up a second-round pick in next year's draft by dealing with the Jaguars. It's a lot to give up for a small-school prospect, so the Jaguars must be high on Cox. | ||
| Jets trade up again | ||
| Jets receive: | Lions receive: | |
| Analysis: A day after trading up for Mark Sanchez, the Jets made another move up the board to trade for the first pick of the second day. Perhaps as insurance for the unhappy Thomas Jones, who didn't report to voluntary workouts, the Jets take Greene, the running back out of Iowa. However, the move left the Jets with just one more pick on the second day of the draft. | ||

| Broncos trade up to take TE Richard Quinn | ||
| Steelers receive: | Broncos receive: | |
| Analysis: The Broncos, with five picks and two trades, were one of the most active teams on Day 1. They ended it with this trade to the Steelers in which they picked Quinn, a blocking tight end. It could mean Denver is looking to shop Tony Scheffler, who was critical of the Jay Cutler trade. | ||
| Colts trade up to take DT Fili Moala | ||
| Dolphins receive: | Colts receive: | |
| Analysis: The Dolphins were soft in the middle last year, which made their decision to move up five spots to take Moala an easy one. It cost them a fifth-rounder, but they had targeted Moala and didn’t want to take a chance of letting Mike Mayock’s fifth-ranked DT slip away. »Fili Moala video: 2009 combine workout | NFL Draft Vignette | ||
| Bills trade up to take OL Andy Levitre | ||
| Cowboys receive: | Bills receive: | |
| Analysis: NFL Network's Michelle Beisner reports that Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones opted not to pick at 51 because all of the players at the team's positions of need were taken. He decided the Cowboys would be able to get a bigger bang for their buck in the third and fourth rounds. More ... | ||
| Seahawks trade up to take DT Max Unger | ||
| Bears receive: | Seahawks receive: | |
| Analysis: NFL Network analyst Brian Billick thought the Seahawks made a smart move to grab the versatile Unger in the second round. Billick compared the University of Oregon product to Colts Pro Bowl center Jeff Saturday. The addition of Unger immediately bolsters Seattle's offensive line. » Max Unger video: 2009 combine workout | NFL Draft Vignette | ||
| Panthers trade up to take DE Everette Brown | ||
| 49ers receive: | Panthers receive: | |
| Analysis: The Panthers really liked Brown and considered him a first-round prospect, so when he was still there in the second they made the move, even if it cost them a first-round pick next year. Panthers GM Marty Hurney said the choice of Brown didn’t have anything to do with the uncertain future of DE Julius Peppers. It was the second straight year the Panthers traded away a future first-rounder. Last year they traded away their 2009 first-round pick in order to take OT Jeff Otah. » Everette Brown video: 2009 combine workout | NFL Draft Vignette | ||
| Patriots trade up to take DT Ron Brace | ||
| Raiders receive: | Patriots receive: | |
| Analysis: It was a busy day for Bill Belichick, who pulled off two trade-downs to accumulate more picks and this trade-up to take Brace, a strong run defender who fits the Patriots’ 3-4 nose tackle position. The selection gives New England depth at the position and insurance for Vince Wilfork, who is entering the final year of his contract. Interesting side note: The second-rounder Oakland obtained in this trade was used on safety Michael Mitchell, who was given a seventh-round grade by NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock. | ||
| Broncos trade up to take CB Alphonso Smith | ||
| Seahawks receive: | Broncos receive: | |
| Analysis: NFL Network analysts Charley Casserly, Mike Mayock and Michael Lombardi are in agreement on this trade: Smith is not worth next year's first round pick. They think the price is too high for a cornerback who is only 5-foot-9 with questionable speed. "It’s a little dangerous to trade away next year’s one," Lombardi said. "You’re taking a chance, especially on a corner, and a small corner at that. That bothers me." The Seahawks will receive the Broncos' natural pick in 2010 and not the one acquired from the Bears for Cutler. | ||
| Packers trade up to take LB Clay Matthews | ||
| Patriots receive: | Packers receive: | |
| Analysis: The Packers had done nothing in free agency to address their 3-4 deficiencies, which almost forced them to make this move and perhaps overpay (basically two third-rounders). They love his lineage and believe he can play any of the four linebacker spots in their new 3-4 scheme. The Patriots parlayed the picks from the Packers to help build up their defensive backfield, including a likely future starter in Butler. | ||
| Ravens trade up to take G Michael Oher | ||
| Patriots receive: | Ravens receive: | |
| Analysis: Oher was still on the board at 23 and that was enough for Ozzie Newsome to move up two spots to take the talented but inconsistent tackle, who Mike Mayock ranked 20th among all prospects in the draft. The Patriots moved back two spots to add two picks that were parlayed into three more selections in a trade with the Packers. | ||
| Eagles trade up to take WR Jeremy Maclin | ||
| Browns receive: | Eagles receive: | |
| Analysis: NFL Network analyst Charley Casserly loves the move by the Eagles, calling their selection of Maclin one of the best picks of the first round. "I thought he (Maclin) had the ability to be a top-10 pick," Casserly said. It was the Browns' third trade in a stretch of 15 picks. | ||
| Buccaneers trade up to take QB Josh Freeman | ||
| Browns receive: | Buccaneers receive: | |
| Analysis: Were the Bucs afraid someone was going to take their guy? NFL Network's Scott Hanson says the Minnesota Vikings were highly interested in Freeman, who was coached by two members of the Vikings staff at Kansas State. It’s possible the Bucs were worried about the Vikings leapfrogging them and taking Freeman. More ... | ||
| Jets trade up to take USC's Sanchez | ||
| Browns receive: | Jets receive: | |
| Analysis: The Jets paid a high price to trade up, handing former coach Eric Mangini a couple of starters from his old defense. NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi called it a great move for the Jets because Sanchez gives the team a franchise quarterback to build around. More ... | ||
Friday, April 17
| Bills get No. 28 overall pick from Eagles for OT Peters | ||
| Bills receive: | Eagles receive: | |
| Analysis: Eagles coach Andy Reid believes Peters, a two-time Pro Bowl left tackle, can fill the hole left by the departure of unrestricted free agent and four-time Pro Bowler Tra Thomas to Jacksonville. More ... | ||
