Scouts to assess Bama's McElroy, Dial in injury-delayed pro day

All 32 teams are expected to have representatives at a workout in Alabama on Tuesday for three NFL prospects.

Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy, tight end Preston Dial and South Alabama wide receiver Courtney Smith will be working out for scouts, according to sources.

McElroy (hand) and Dial (sports hernia) were unable to participate fully in Alabama's pro day March 9 due to injuries, so this session was scheduled to allow them to show more to scouts. McElroy requested that Smith, a prospect with mid-round potential, take part as well. Smith and McElroy formed some chemistry during the Under Armour Senior Bowl and McElroy wanted to throw passes to him as part of his workout.

Smith, a small-school prospect, could benefit greatly by the exposure, particularly if he runs the 40-yard dash in the 4.5 range. Smith is raw, and needs to learn more about the complexities of the game as he makes the jump from a low level of competition. But he has strong physical attributes and has already worked out for several teams privately, with the Miami Dolphins among the teams monitoring him, according to a source. If Smith shines Tuesday, more teams could take note.

McElroy has impressed scouts with his composure and intelligence. While he's not as physically gifted as others at his position, he has the intangibles teams covet. He could stick around in the league for a long time as a valuable backup, able to start when needed and help others learn and digest a system.
