Overview

Even though Herdman played for a Canadian university in Simon Fraser, he was named a Division II All-American by the American Football Coaches Association and invited to the Senior Bowl. Herdman was a three-time Great Northwest Athletic Conference pick during his career, setting the conference record for career tackles with 428. He led the Clan with 113 tackles, 12.5 for loss, 3.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles. That was the lowest number of tackles he's had over the past three years, as he accumulated 133 tackles (9.5 for loss) in 2015 and 165 (14 for loss, 2.5 sacks) in 2014.

Analysis

Strengths

Plays with good power in his lower half. Able to brace up to redirects and then spin out of the block. Has some pop behind his lead shoulder that he throws into blockers. Instinctive and ready to trigger downhill after the ball. Effective reading keys. Has stop-start quickness with sudden change of direction. Good short-area quickness and reactive athleticism.

Weaknesses

Sawed off frame with short arms and small hands. Lack of length limits tackle radius and forces him to close out ball carrier before launching into tackle. Will have issues clearing the trees if he runs downhill too quickly. Will struggle to play the ball in pass coverage due to short arms.

Draft Projection

UDFA

Bottom Line

Packs some power in his compact frame and plays with good lateral quickness and quick feet. Herdman simply falls below the size and length requirements teams look for from the linebacker position. He will likely have to prove himself as an undrafted weakside linebacker prospect.
