Draft Analysis:

  • 193LBS. Weight

Overview

Played one season for Blinn Junior College before enrolling at New Mexico in 2012. Moved from wide receiver to cornerback after 2012 season. Arrested on rape charges in April 2014 after a woman who was a New Mexico student at the time alleged that Edwards and two other men raped her. Edwards was suspended from the team after the arrest. He was reinstated to the team in August 2014 after the case was dismissed.

Analysis

Strengths

Rangy frame with good overall size. Former wide receiver who appears to recognize route combinations from zone coverage. Able to maintain feel for quarterback’s eyes and the receiver from off position. Has adequate long speed for big corner. Has length to annoy receivers from press. Aggressive when ball is in the air and attacks ball rather than showing excessive respect to receiver. Maintains leverage vs. run and works ball carrier back toward help. Shows ability to disengage in time. Willing to find and fill in run support on the back side near line of scrimmage.

Weaknesses

Scouts concerned about maturity issues. Average feet when releasing from press and getting into coverage. Doesn't transition as fluidly as needed. Will lose inside leverage from press at times due to impatience and declaring/opening too soon. Needs to improve finding and tracking the ball earlier on deep throws. Not a physical thumper behind his shells and leads with shoulder instead of wrapping up. Missing quick-trigger twitch to close quickly on what he sees.

Draft Projection

Priority free agent

Bottom Line

Looks the part on the hoof, but still a work in progress as he transitions from wide receiver to cornerback after making the position change just two years ago. Edwards showed noticeable improvement on tape in 2014, but he is a rotational cornerback who is in need of more snaps to gain valuable experience at the position. Despite his size, might have to stick at cornerback rather than giving safety a shot.
