Analysis

Strengths

Instinctive and productive. Sniffs out misdirection and trick plays to recover into position to make a play. Gets a jump on outside runs and beats linemen over the top. Takes good angles to the ball carrier. When he gets downhill, can leverage his gap against run. Football smart with reputation in scouting circles as film junkie. Rarely fooled by playaction. Gets good depth and picks up coverage in zone. Good weight-room work ethic. Had four interceptions and five fumbles recovered over last two seasons.

Weaknesses

Below-average athleticism and size by NFL standards for the position. Plays square and struggles to slip blocks. Plays a little upright and stiff. Instincts don't always translate into production. Not athletic enough to get to what he diagnoses. Top talent beats him at point of attack. Slow to disengage when linemen get to him on second level. Must improve hand usage. Short arms caused problems with wrapping up, allowing too many missed tackles.

Draft Projection

Round 7 or priority free agent

Bottom Line

Tough, instinctive inside linebacker with a great feel for where the play is going but limitations on converting instincts into tackles. Doesn't disengage well enough to be a roster factor and must take more chances on getting to the spot first to have a shot to make a team.
