Draft Analysis:

  • 6'1" Height
  • 246LBS. Weight

Outstanding leader on the field and in the locker room. Selected as captain twice and is often seen lining up defenses. Impressive instincts that lead him in the direction of the play a split second before ball is even snapped. Sees play fakes and bails into coverage quickly. Scrapes quickly from gap to gap in search of final destination of ball carrier. Uses hand to shoot punch into blocker and keep himself clean. Can disengage and get to his tackle in confined spaces. Reads quarterback's eyes and breaks on throws. Had 12 passes defensed and took two interceptions back for touchdowns in 2014. Steady, mature approach on the field. Married with a newborn son named Asaiah.

Might lack the necessary play speed to perimeter to be a consistent chase-and-finish tackler. Take-on linebacker willing to attack blockers, but lacking the necessary size to do it consistently. Change of direction in space can be a challenge for him. Misses impact tackle opportunities due to marginal burst, requiring precise tackling. Charged with two misdemeanor counts of second-degree vehicle prowling in March 2014 after stealing two parking passes and selling them to teammates. The charges are expected to be dropped after completion of deferred adjudication.

Bottom Line

Slightly undersized for the brand of football he plays, Timu is an aggressive, determined inside 'backer with the instincts and lateral quickness to race linemen and running backs to the spot and the hands to keep himself tackle-ready. Timu showed an ability to excel in zone coverage in 2014, and if he can prove to be a factor on special teams, he has a legitimate shot to make a roster as a backup linebacker.
