Analysis

Strengths

Comes out of the gate with low pad level and quick takeoff. Athletic penetrator with an ability to get to blocker's edge and make it uncomfortable for him. High school triple jumper with explosive lower-body traits. Able to close down back side when disengaging from blocks properly. Uses rip move effectively once he senses an edge advantage. Will look to finish when he sees a play is there to be made, even if it takes time and effort. Showed great mental toughness to battle back from consecutive missed seasons due to injury (back and Achilles) to be named first-team All-Conference USA in 2013.

Weaknesses

Pad level tends to rise after contact. Allows his base to narrow and gets leveraged out of his run fit. Lacking pop behind his hands in his initial contact. Tends to be a one-trick rusher rather than going to counter moves. Content to stay on his bull rush rather than fighting to improve position. Needs to stack and shed more consistently. Undersized interior lineman who is seemingly out of position against the run while taking snaps at defensive tackle and nose. Won't win as pass rusher when he's squared up. Missed all but three games in 2011 and all of 2012 due to injuries.

Draft Projection

Priority free agent

Bottom Line

Defensive end turned undersized interior lineman who is still looking for the right fit defensively. His best attribute is his explosiveness and quickness off the ball, but he lacks the desired power and anchor at the point of attack to fight for his territory in the run game. With his frame, his best bet is to catch on with a 3-4 penetrating front.
