Analysis

Strengths

Three-year starter. Has quick, compact delivery with no wasted motion. Flashes some anticipatory traits and showed an ability to make throws into tight windows between the hash and the numbers. Athletic enough to get rid of ball quickly if throw comes open sooner than expected. More than enough arm and can make NFL throws. Has experience working in pro-style offense. Has spent offseason working on improving mechanics with former NFL quarterback Jay Fiedler.

Weaknesses

Footwork was very problematic at times. Inconsistent stepping into throws, causing accuracy issues. Fine line between anticipation throws and early throws induced by some pocket panic. Allows constricting pocket to get the best of him at times. Doesn't always let routes develop and takes catches and yardage off the board with premature throws. Needs to scan field and play more chess against secondary.

Draft Projection

Priority free agent

Bottom Line

Nova has arm talent and there are plays where he jumps off the tape at you, but the overriding question is whether or not he can learn to play with more poise and patience. Learning to get through his progressions and allowing plays to develop will take time, but Nova is a quarterback who might be worth a shot on a practice squad so that a team has time to try to develop his potential.
