Draft Analysis:

  • 6'6" Height
  • 251LBS. Weight

Shows good ball tracking and adequate body control to adjust and make tough catches. Not slippery in his routes, but is slippery after the catch. Creates yards after catch with agility in the open field and a willingness to get upfield quickly. Shows good hand placement as a blocker. Runs his feet at contact on downblocks and maintains through the whistle. Not asked to be a consistent in-line blocker, but does show a level of ability for it.

Hands need to show more consistency. Can come up with the tough catches, but will double catch and mishandle catchable balls too often. Doesn't show much quickness in his routes or an ability to separate at any point. Needs to improve footwork as a blocker if he's going to give himself a shot to be a legitimate blocker at the next level. Has a poor feel for finding open space against zone coverage.

Bottom Line

Tight end with good size, but more of a finesse approach to the game. Is a willing blocker and has some ability in that area, but not a grinder who would be drafted on blocking alone. Has some ability after the catch, but is inconsistent getting to the catch point thanks to a lack of quickness in his routes. Mahina has the potential to make a roster and earn playing time in the NFL.
