Outstanding leader and willing to do whatever it takes to make transition to wide receiver. Thickness of frame to potentially out-muscle smaller cornerbacks. Surprising smoothness releasing against press coverage at East-West Shrine Game practices. Showed improvement with his routes as the week of practices progressed. High character in every regard. Ability to play scout team quarterback is a plus.
Weaknesses
Very little experience at wide receiver. Has below-average speed and will need much more time and seasoning to run functional routes. Issues with drops and consistency of hands have been a problem for him throughout the offseason transition from quarterback.
Draft Projection
Priority free agent
Bottom Line
Unlike former Michigan-quarterback-turned-running-back Denard Robinson, Gardner doesn't have the desired speed or quickness to fall back on during his transition to a new position. As a receiver, he is way behind and he will have to shine on special teams to have any shot other than on a practice squad in Year 1.
