Draft Analysis:

  • 31 1/4" Arm Length
  • 207LBS. Weight
  • 8 7/8" Hands

Former cornerback with potential to play some man if called on. Interchangeable safety prospect. Can play in box or on top. Shows relatively smooth hip turn with coordinated feet in space. Well-schooled and rarely busts an assignment. Played in blitz-happy scheme and understands angles to the quarterback. Comes from high to low to attack run game with no hesitation. Well-rounded with ability to play in multiple schemes. Can cover on special teams.

Instincts are an issue. Slow to recognize playaction and drop into space. Inconsistent reaction time on help over top from single-high spot. Late to find ball in zone read. At times, takes poor angles to the ball in run support and comes in too hot when it's time to tackle. Scouts question his ability to carry speed downfield without head start. Needs to show more discipline and patience against run and pass.

"He's OK. I just can't find any part of his game that I think is starter quality. He might be able to be a backup." -- NFC North scout

Bottom Line

Rock-steady safety with an ability to play in a variety of schemes thanks to his ability to cover, tackle and blitz. Bonner was asked to blitz and play near the line of scrimmage more than most safeties in this draft, but his background as a cornerback offers potential to play in a variety of spots on the field. Bonner must answer questions about his speed and instincts if he is to stick with an NFL team.
