Analysis

Strengths

Shows an ability to slither around blocks and be first to get hands on ball carrier. Seen on tape lining up defense and making calls. Flows quickly to run fit with squared frame. Rarely runs himself out of position due to overaggressiveness. Has sneaky range speed on perimeter chase. Gets into coverage quickly in zone and man and has adequate cover skills.

Weaknesses

Undersized inside linebacker with long, thin lower body. Can be engulfed and taken completely out of play if he's not diligent with play speed. Plays upright in space and his change of direction was disappointing for a smaller linebacker. Played with shoulder and knee issues in 2014 and those will need to be examined by team doctors. Inconsistent commitment in attacking against the run and fails to unlock hips and explode into targets.

Draft Projection

Priority free agent

Sources Tell Us

"Too small. Good college player, but doesn't have enough play strength." -- NFC scout assigned to Pac-12

Bottom Line

Has gained weight this offseason in an attempt to show NFL teams he can carry more weight outside of the Oregon program, but he will still likely be forced to the WILL linebacker spot in a 4-3. Malone posted 190 tackles over the last two seasons, but his lack of physicality and special athletic traits hurt his chances of being drafted.
