Selected by: New England Patriots
Round: 5
Pick (Overall): 28 (159)

Pick Analysis: Bill Belichick adds another big, physical tight end to their rotation. Smith is a tough blocker at the point of attack, and he is an ideal No. 3 tight end on their roster.

Smith has the size, mentality and hands potential you look for in an NFL tight end but likely does not possess enough explosiveness to make many plays in the passing game. However, he likely will find a home on a team that values blocking and tenacity from its tight ends. Drops some routine passes but also plucks and snatches away from his frame and makes difficult grabs. Can get open against zone but lacks the burst and route-running ability to beat man coverage. Tough run blocker, capable in pass pro, and can get even better with some technical refinement. Smith is a mid-to-late-round prospect.

Smith has enough size and speed for the next level. Flashes the ability to extend for receptions around the rim of his catch radius. Capable of locating soft spots in zone coverage and using his frame to shield off defenders. Does a good job of sustaining as a blocker. Plays with a mean streak.

Not a big-play threat. Lacks the speed to get vertical. Not elusive after the catch. Hands are inconsistent and will drop catchable balls. Body-catches at times. Doesn’t explode out of his stance. Struggles to separate against man coverage. Doesn’t set up defenders. Plays high on occasion.
