Overview

Burney missed the first seven games of the 2010 season due to NCAA violations, but he is an explosive corner that could be very effective in sub packages. He is undersized, but has excellent speed and the short-area burst to mirror receivers in man coverage. He also shows very good instincts in zone and has the lateral agility and burst to make big returns after interceptions. He is not an effective presser at the line and will be out-muscled by bigger receivers when the ball is in the air. Burney will be effective in nickel and dime packages and should be a Day 2 pick.


Strengths

Burney has excellent speed. Confident kid that has a knack for anticipating routes in zone coverage and the hands to make interceptions. Explosive athlete that closes fast with the ball in the air and has the extra gear to stick with burners on go routes. Willing tackler in run support.

Weaknesses

Lacks the strength to shed blockers in the running game and will get run over on occasion when trying to make a tackle. Shorter athlete that struggles to make plays in jump ball situations. Sloppy footwork limits his speed in transition at times. Over-aggressive and can be vulnerable to double moves.
