Selected by: San Francisco 49ers
Round: 6
Pick (Overall): 13 (182)
Pick Analysis: Watch out, NFC West. The 49ers just added the second-best blocking tight end in the draft. Byham is an inline bruiser, who will knock people off the ball and create space for Frank Gore and Anthony Dixon. Mike Singletary and Trent Baalke are making a philosophical statement about who the 49ers will be.

After being the top tight end in Pittsburgh’s program, Byham had to split time at the position with fellow senior Dorin Dickerson. Byham’s role became pretty much the blocking tight end with the occasional ball thrown his way to keep the defense honest. He is not real quick or nifty on his release and labors coming out of his breaks, which will make it difficult to separate from defenders at the next level. He should find a role in the NFL as a backup that can be used in two tight end situations as an extra blocker.

Byham is thickly built with soft hands and adequate body control. Finds holes in zone coverage and is a tough runner after the catch. Great blocker that generates a strong push and can climb to the second level.

Does not possess adequate speed and is not explosive off of the line. Lacks suddenness and struggles to gain separation in man coverage. Limited experience as a pass catcher. Times jumps poorly and is not a threat in the red zone.
