Overview

Pender was a productive three-year starter for the Boilermakers. He is a tall, lean cornerback who lacks great speed in coverage. He is a good athlete (foot quickness, agility and balance) who can be effective in combination zone coverages but would be a liability on an island in pure man coverage. He is a willing run-support defender but lacks power on contact. He is inconsistent to keep his pads over his feet as an open-field tackler. Pender doesn't track the ball well and has suspect ball skills. He can flip his hips and shows decent range and closing burst in coverage. Pender has talent to contribute in sub packages as a nickel back and as a core special teams player.

Strengths

Pender is tall and possesses good footwork to consistently stay balanced. Sinks his hips well and has a good burst to stay with receivers in and out of their breaks. Heady player who prepares well and follows the quarterback's eyes in zone coverage. Does not shy away from contact in run support.

Weaknesses

Lacks the bulk to deliver good shots when tackling and leads with his head too often. Loses the ball too frequently and does not have the hands to get picks. Reacts a bit slow at times which makes him a liability in man coverage despite his good overall athleticism.
