Overview
Martin went from a walk-on to all-conference selection the final two seasons of his career. He could once again be facing an uphill battle in the NFL. While Martin was explosive enough to rack up 15.5 career sacks for the Hokies, he's viewed by pro scouts as a classic "tweener." Martin needs a strong performance in workouts to prove that he has the athleticism to handle playing back in space, as he lacks the bulk necessary to remain at defensive end.
Analysis
Strengths
Positives: Strong upper-body and leg strength for a linebacker. ... Wins hand play against tackles with violent movements. ... Relentless pass rusher, able to get off a block to go around right tackles. ... Can spin off blocks to get back into a gap and make a play on the ballcarrier. ... Secure tackler, using his long arms and strength to bring down players in space. ... Moved to linebacker in some situations, looking smooth in his backpedal. ... Uses his hands to keep linemen off his knees on cut blocks. ... Reads the screen well and has solid backfield awareness. ... Should impact coverage units on special teams, keeping his inside lane to neutralize cutbacks.
Negatives: Lunch-pail player who makes most of his plays with hustle, not superior athleticism. ... Undersized as an every-down defensive end and has only adequate speed for a pro linebacker. ... Struggled when asked to play back in coverage with the Hokies. ... Lacks the straight-line speed, hip flexibility and lateral agility to handle coverage responsibilities. ... Wears down during the late stages of games. ... Might play with his hand down on third downs.
