Overview

McLaughlin bounced back nicely from an Achilles injury sustained in early March of 2009. He missed three games but was able to contribute as a vocal leader as well as an effective run defender for the Eagles. He is a tough, hard-nosed competitor who lacks ideal quickness and speed. He has just average range in pursuit and can get caught up in traffic due to inconsistent shedding techniques. He is decent in short zone schemes but lacks the athleticism to be an effective man coverage defender. McLaughlin is a good college player who wins with toughness, instincts and effort but is likely to contribute only as a backup at the next level. There are some durability concerns with his past injury history.

Analysis

Strengths

McLaughlin possesses the necessary size to defend the inside running game and play in a phone booth at the next level. Is a productive player who exhibits impressive leadership skills on the field. Has good instincts when diagnosing. Plays with a high level of toughness. Has the work ethic to maximize his abilities.

Weaknesses

Is only an adequate athlete for the linebacker position. Is only average with his hand use when shedding blockers. Has some durability concerns. Only possesses average range and isn't a sideline-to-sideline guy. Does not have the necessary movement skills to play man coverage at the next level.
