Overview
Left tackle Michael Oher garners most of the attention, but scouts watching film of the Ole Miss line had to take notice of the versatile Miller as well. After starting for a season and a half at right tackle, Miller moved inside to guard as a senior and played well. He even earned SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week for his play against Auburn. He missed one 2008 start as punishment for being late to a Friday morning meeting, but he stepped in at right tackle for an injured John Jerry. Scouts appreciate his strength and steadiness inside, along with that versatility. Had an arm span of 34 1/4 inches and a hand span of 10 1/2 inches at the combine.
Analysis
Strengths
Positives: Short, squatty powerful build preferred by offensive line coaches for the inside. Good initial hand punch and can control his opponent with just his upper body strength. When he lands his punch and remembers to move his feet, can be effective outside at right tackle. Strong hands to latch on to the defender and can ride them outside. Alert in pass protection. Looks to hit someone if not actively engaged. At least adequate lateral agility and balance in tight quarters. Plays with good leverage and can drive defenders off the ball due to his size and leg drive.
Negatives: Top heavy. Bit of a waist-bender who will lean on his opponent and latch on rather than keep his feet moving laterally. May lack the kick-step depth and lateral agility to handle working on the edge. Struggles inside against quicker defenders. Lacks the quickness to recover if beaten off the snap initially. Shows at least adequate foot quickness to get to the second level, but struggles to break down in space and hit the moving target.
