Overview
Washington is a big, strong defensive lineman who had average production for the Crimson Tide during his career. He flashes natural strength and power but can be inconsistent to anchor effectively when not playing with good pad level. He doesn't have great quickness and needs to expand his pass-rush package (moves and counters). He is inconsistent with his effort and can be somewhat of an underachiever for his talent level. He is best between the tackles, because his lack of lateral agility gets exposed in space. Washington has the size and strength to give depth to an NFL defensive line but will need to develop in several areas to contribute consistently.
Analysis
Strengths
Washington has adequate height and a thick build. Instinctive player who locates the ball fast and uses his big body to clog up running lanes. Powerful bull rusher who drives blockers back on their heels and collapses the pocket. Productive between the tackles and versatile enough to play inside in the 4-3 or end in a 3-4.
Weaknesses
Lacks a good initial burst and has a limited pass-rush package, which will prevent him from getting after the quarterback at the next level. Does not show a strong punch and struggles to use his hands to consistently shed blockers. Loses leverage due to high pad level too often, which neutralizes his strength. Takes too many plays off and does not get the most out of his abilities.
