Overview
A jack-of-all-trades for the Eagles, Akin was recruited as a running back and has since seen action at outside linebacker, strong safety, cornerback and even kick returner. Despite being moved around throughout his career, the versatile Akins' tendency to make plays stands out. He leaves Boston College with 132 career tackles, including 21 tackles for loss, 15.5 sacks and five interceptions. If Akins can impress at the Combine, his instincts and knack for making big plays could inspire a creative defensive coordinator or eager special teams coach to grab Akins in the late rounds.
Analysis
Strengths
Positives: Rangy athlete with the frame to add an additional 10-15 pounds of muscle mass. ... Instinctive defender. ... Always around the ball. ... Good straight-line speed for the position. ... Brings rare agility and coverage ability to the position. ... Effective open-field tackler who isn't afraid of taking on bigger ballcarriers. ... Willing to mix it up with blockers. ... Effective blitzer. ... Times blitzes and stunts well and has a closing burst to make the play. ... Versatile defender capable of making an immediate contribution on special teams.
Negatives: A classic "tweener." ... Lacks the bulk and experience at linebacker to warrant anything more than a late-round gamble. ... Good aggression to take on blocks, but gets washed out if engaged. ... Relies on running around blocks and though he'll make the tackle, often has to do it downfield.
