Analysis

Strengths

Possesses power in his hands. Subtle but sharp with his two-hand swipe designed to brush a tackle's punch aside. Able to generate moderate pocket push with his bull-rush. Uses effective left hand stab, right hand chop rush move to soften the edge and turn the corner. Has lower center of gravity and leg strength push through the blocker's shoulder once he gets to an edge. Doesn't stay engaged with blocks for very long. Bodies up with a thud as a tackler. Has some experience standing and dropping into space. Productive sack man with a key-in motor over the last three seasons for the Hokies.

Weaknesses

Lacks height and length of a defensive end and may have to transition to 3-4 outside backer. Face-up, tight-hipped player. Long-armed tackles can stick him to the end of their jab and ride him out of the gap on run plays and up around the arc as a pass rusher. Doesn't get optimal explosion up the field out of his stance. Missing the flexibility and upper body turn to flip over the top as a rusher. Predictable rush track lacks an effective, inside counter. Below-average reactive quickness. Shifty runners leave him grasping and chasing. Closing burst is below average.

Bottom Line

On paper, Ekanem will be lacking in both the physical and athletic traits that teams will want out of either a defensive end or outside linebacker. However, he has functional power, above average hands and a toughness to his game that could translate in the right scheme and for the right coach.
