Long-limbed and consistently gets his hands on the defender first. Proficient cut-blocker. Plays with wide base and flashes good initial foot-quickness and set-up after snap. Excellent tempo to second level and locates and engages with consistent success. Understands angles and works feet into position before engaging in lateral run blocking. Keeps feet moving upon contact and shows finisher potential. Relaxed arms with well-timed punch. Recognizes twists and picks them up. Keeps weight centered.

Lacks natural point-of-attack power. Relies on length over hip explosion and leverage in run game. Susceptible to inside moves in pass pro. Too much waist-bending opens him up to arm-over moves. Needs more snap in initial punch. Despite athletic build, looks heavy-footed when asked to move in space. Sluggish to recover in pass pro when beaten.

Sources Tell Us

"I think he'll test well, but he's more tight-hipped than you expect. It really bothers me that he has issues with counter-moves considering his tackle experience and length." -- NFC North regional scout

Bottom Line

Three-year starter on a well-schooled, talented offensive line. Teams will covet Matias' length and pass-protection traits, as he has the build of a tackle. He uses technique over power. The question is whether he has the hips and athleticism to incorporate more explosiveness in run blocking and improve against change of direction. High-end potential, but not a lock to reach that potential.
