Overview

Three-time honorable mention All-Big 12 (2011-13). Spent freshman season (2009) at Stanford, but transferred after being buried on the depth chart behind Coby Fleener, Zach Ertz and Levine Toilolo. 2013: Played in 12 games and started eight. Did not score a touchdown. 2012: Played in 13 games and started in three. 2011: Played in all 13 games and started eight. His 15 receptions for 146 yards were most among tight ends. 2010: Sat out season after transferring from Stanford. 2009: Redshirted.

Analysis

Strengths

Terrific size. Functional seal, “move” or “wham” blocker. Can stay frontal long enough to keep his quarterback clean in the quick game. Lined up inline and in the backfield. Catches the low-difficulty, short-to-intermediate passes he should.

Weaknesses

Average foot speed. Stiff movement -- cannot separate vs. man coverage. Does not play to his size. Poor in-line blocker -- gets overpowered at the point of attack. Limited grip strength to sustain. Minimal receiving production (not a natural catcher).

Bottom Line

Big, smart Stanford transfer who was used primarily as a blocker in an explosive offense, though he does not excel in this area or in the receiving game. Could be startled by the body power of NFL defensive ends, and has a ceiling as a No. 3 tight end.
