Desired size and strength to carry the load. Smooth glider. Maneuvers through pockets of traffic and has feel for finding a crease. Consistently finishes run and falls forward. Will hit the gas and steam into contact with pads low. Drives legs at contact and will force another defender to come help with the tackle. Shows adequate one-cut talent with an ability to cut it across the grain when needed. Stepped it up as receiver his senior year with 29 catches for 236 yards. Solid hands and ran diverse routes at times rather than just being safety option in flat. Consistent, high-end production for three straight years.

At times, his patience as runner borders on nonchalance. Yards per carry went down each of last two seasons which may speak to lack of confidence in his line or lack of urgency in his attack. Play speed fails to impress. Doesn't seem to have burst necessary to blow past first two levels and get into the secondary. Steady but nothing flashes on tape. Busted protection on some blitzes and showed below average effort and consistency as a pass blocker.

Bottom Line

Edwards has the size to be an NFL back and he was a consistent producer within his conference, but his marginal play speed and tendency to drift towards the line of scrimmage could cause him to get captured more quickly than desired for a starting running back. He has the traits to be a backup, but must show special teams ability and improved pass protection.
