Durell Mapp, OLB

Overview

Overview

This former walk-on worked himself into a second-team All-ACC linebacker in his senior year, accumulating 132 tackles (included 23 against N.C. State, 15 solos), seven for loss and 3.0 sacks. Mapp actually was a three-year starter for the Heels, in the middle in 2005-06 and on the weak side in '07. May fit in either spot in the NFL, depending on the team's scheme and expectations for the position.

Analysis

Analysis

:

Positives: Quick closing speed to the ball. ... Has good instincts and work ethic. ... Seems to be around the ball quite often. ... Reads the quarterback's eyes to get to the play. ... Holds his ground well against tackles and guards on the edge or in the second level. ... Can run through fullback blocks to reach quarterback on the blitz. ... Best fit as a 3-4 inside linebacker. ...

Negatives: Stands too upright in his stance, which does not allow him to change direction quickly. ... Needs to play stronger at the line of scrimmage, as he does not disengage from blocks on the edge consistently. ... Could be more explosive when tackling. ... Lacks fluid hips dropping into and mirroring backs in coverage, much better attacking in a straight line. ... Does not consistently take correct angles to ballcarriers in the open field.
