Two-time honorable mention All-Big Ten selection. Started all 27 games in final two college seasons. 2013: Started all 13 games. 2012: Started all 14 games. Recorded 10 tackles in Big Ten Championship win over Nebraska. 2011: Played in 13 games and started three. 2010: Played in all 13 games. 2009: Redshirted. High school: First year of playing organized football was as a senior.

Excellent size. Good straight-line speed. Bends his knees and pedals softly. Reacts well to plays in front of him. Played a hybrid safety role at UW, including defending slot receivers (even played CB in a pinch against BYU). Special-teams experience. Coach's son.

Average flexibility and range. Still developing positional instincts and diagnostic skills. Man-coverage limitations -- dull transitional quickness and closing burst. Ordinary production on the ball -- not a playmaker. Does not punish or intimidate. Reliability should be looked into.

Draft Projection

Rounds 5-6

Bottom Line

Southward, who played only one year of high school football, is a size-speed prospect still learning positional nuances. Could get his foot in the door on special teams and buy some time to develop as a reserve.
