In his high school senior year, McCray was named county?s Athlete of the Year. He played quarterback and defensive back, and contributed over 1,600 yards of total offense, seven interceptions, seven pass breakups, 40 tackles and a forced fumble.

In his first year. McCray saw action in 13 games, mostly as a special teams player. In 2010, McCray appeared in 11 games, and missed two due to injury. He started at right cornerback, left cornerback, and free safety over the course of the season. He had 19 tackles, three pass breakups, and an interception. In 2011, after leading the Southern Conference and tying for eighth nationally with five interception, McCray earned fourth-team all-America recognition from Phil Steele Publications, and was named first-team all-Southern Conference by the league?s coaches and media. McCray also contributed 48 tackles and nine passes defended. In his final season, McCray tallied 55 tackles, four pass breakups, and four interceptions.
